Guest Post: DIY Microwave Popcorn!

May 21, 2012

Hi Everyone!  I’m Sarah from Cooker Girl.  I write about my adventures in cooking, baking and candy-making.  I share lots of great recipes so I hope you’ll stop over and check it out.

Becca and I met last year through the Ohio Blogging Association.  OBA hosts events each month for bloggers and blog supporters.  It’s a great way to meet new people and make new friends.  And I think we all know how difficult that can be as an adult!  If you want to be involved with this group, just contact OBA on their Facebook page.

This month the OBA event is a state-wide blog swap.  Becca and I were paired up so I’m guest posting here, and she’s taking over Cooker Girl for the day.  To check out a list of all the participants, head over to Poise in Parma today.

Today I’m sharing a way to make microwave popcorn without the store bought chemicals in a bag.  Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks, and I’ve actually got a popcorn popper, but I know a lot of people don’t.  It’s a unitasker that I would love to transition out of my house, but I love popcorn too much!  For whatever reason, I was never willing to stand at the stove shaking a pan of kernels.

Well, there’s a solution for all of us!  I stumbled across this recipe on Pinterest and had to give it a try.  It makes microwave popcorn without the bag and without the chemicals.  All you need is a small casserole dish with a lid (which is pretty common in most kitchens), popcorn kernels and oil.  That’s it!  Making microwave popcorn couldn’t be any easier.  This popcorn is more crisp and less “squeaky” if you know what I mean.  And with the limitless possibilities for flavorings and toppings, it’s a great wonder that I don’t eat popcorn everyday.

Cook’s Note:  This recipe specifies about 5 minutes for the cooking time.  My popcorn took almost 10 minutes, so keep your eye on it.  Everyone’s microwave is different so start it at 5 minutes and keep adding more time if necessary.

 Microwave Popcorn

Adapted from a post on Craftster (found through Pinterest)

1.5-2 quart microwave-safe glass dish with a lid (I used my Pyrex)

3 Tbsp raw popcorn kernels

1 tsp cooking oil (I used canola)

Add the oil and the kernels to the casserole dish and mix the kernels to coat with oil.  Put the lid on.  Turn the microwave on for 5 minutes, and watch closely.  Add more time if needed.  Using protection on your hands, dump the popcorn out of the glass bowl (be careful, it’s hot!) into another bowl and add your favorite toppings.

Brilliant. My Mom had one of those old popcorn machines on wheels. It was awesome. But I’ve always used the microwave and feeling so bad about it after I’m done devouring the bag. So trying this before I sit down to a movie. Thanks!

I grew up with “real” popcorn on the stove. Then we went to the air popper but it just wasn’t the same. After that, microwave popcorn tasted like heaven! Now that we know microwave popcorn is full of chemicals, I went back to the real popcorn on the stove again. I love the flavor so much more and have no intention of ever eating the store bought stuff again. I’ve seen versions that use a paper bag but was never comfortable trying that. I’ll definitely give this a try- seems like a winner! Thanks so much for sharing!

This. This is so genius! Thank you so much for sharing! I love popcorn on the stove – I even have a whirly pop to make it. But my husband isn’t into it at all. So I end up making waaaaaay too much or not making it at all because of the effort involved. But in the microwave! I will do this all the time!!!

Have you experimented with different kinds of oil? My favorite topping for popcorn is chocolate! Looking forward to trying this out. Just stopping by from the OBA swap.

I haven’t tried other oils yet, but now that you mention it, I have a chili oil I should try!

I am not a popcorn person, but my daughter is, I think I may have to share this with her!

This is fantastic! I can’t wait to try this out. It’s got to be so much better than bagged popcorn.

The boyscout popcorn doesn’t use the really bad carcinagenic popcorn stuff in it, so I have some of that. I also buy plain popcorn and do it in the microwave in a bowl with a lid as well. I don’t use oil though, then I can add a little butter or parmesan to the top later.

I still add butter later!

I think the purpose of the oil is to help the kernels heat up faster and more evenly.

I love this! It sounds so much more fun that throwing a bag in the microwave. Something you could do at get togethers or on movie night! This OBA Blog Swap was an awesome idea!
