Afghanistan Earthquake Leaves Over 2,200 Dead in Eastern Provinces
A shallow 6.0 magnitude quake struck eastern Afghanistan on Aug. 31, 2025, killing more than 2,200 people and injuring over 3,600. Whole villages in Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan were flattened, with 5,400 homes damaged or destroyed. Rescue teams battle landslides, blocked roads and harsh mountain terrain. The disaster deepens an already dire humanitarian situation as international aid wanes. Volunteers scramble to provide food, water, health kits and mental‑health support amid mounting winter‑time needs.
